If you’re at all involved in the web design field, you’ve likely come across the modern rise to dominance of vector graphics, which allow for smooth graphic creation, zooming, and printing. But this exciting format has left its predecessor unexamined by some web designers new to the field, and while there’s no denying that raster graphics are inferior for a number of applications, this format is a wise choice for some projects and can make for some fun experiments. Pretty much everyone who has produced work online, from artists to SEO consultants taking a break from search engine optimization to doodle a logo or enhance a company portrait, has played with Adobe Photoshop or similar editing programs, and it is around these experiences that the design culture of the raster graphic has centered.

Raster graphics are sometimes also referred to a bitmap images, as the format relies on a structure of pixels in which a varying number of bits of information are stored. These pixels relay diverse information to programs and computer screens for display, including color (typically based on the RGB system and conveying a certain percentage of red, blue, and green to achieve a certain hue) and position. The vast majority of computer and web graphics –especially small items such as icons– have traditionally been created with this bitmap structure. And indeed, despite its imperfections, this method has been used to create a variety of digital artistic masterpieces, from attractive and well-received abstract designs for pages to full-fledged digital paintings that rival traditional formats. The principle drawback of the classic raster graphic is that it is resolution-dependent. This means that scaling is generally not an option, at least beyond a certain threshold, because the graphic itself will become distorted, blurry, or otherwise a mere echo of the original’s look and feel. Some designers might declare that this isn’t a problem if a graphic is created in the correct size to begin with, and this certainly has its merit, but often, graphics are changed in terms of size after they’ve been produced in order to make them perfectly suit the setting or application. Printing can also be disadvantageous with raster graphics, as the nature of the medium can lead to uneven lines or noise when ink is put to paper.

That being said, raster graphics are still the format of choice for photographs and photo-realistic images.     Construction is one of California’s largest industries with new residential and commercial buildings going up at an ever-increasing pace. The construction industry in California is regulated by the Contractors State Licensing Board which tests and issues licenses to approximately 25,000 contractors a year.

    Becoming a licensed contractor in California can be a positive career move for anyone experienced in the construction industry. Contractors are one of the most sought-after construction professions in the state. In uncertain economic times, contractors will have more solid opportunities at continued employment and, when the economy improves, contractors will assuredly have more work available than they can handle.

    To become a licenses contractor in California, you need four years of experience as a journeyman, foreman, contractor or owner-builder. Some of the required experience can be achieved through prior education in the industry. Once this experience has been accepted by the State Licensing Board, you can sit for the contractor’s exam.

    The State Licensing Board issues licenses in three main categories: Class “A”- General Engineering Contractor, Class “B”- General Building Contractor, and Class “C”- Specialty Contractor. Class “C” licenses are broken down into various specialties such as Drywall, Masonry, Refrigeration, Roofing, etc. Contractors who will work with asbestos require further training and certification under federal safety guidelines.

The completed application is sent along with the $250 fee to the Licensing Board. The application is reviewed by the Board and, if they deem your experience completed, you will receive a Notice to Appear for Examination. This notice will also tell you the date and time of the exam. There are exam locations in many of the major cities in California, which makes it easy for students to attend one in their area.

    The California Contractor’s License has two parts, both of which must be passed in order to hold a license: Law & Business and an exam specific to the specialty or trade they are applying for. The Law & Business exam covers issues specific to the construction industry in the areas of contract law, dealing with customers and employees, and general business and finance. The exams consist of multiple choice questions and students are given 2 ½ hours to complete each exam. The exams are offered on a computerized system and marks are available immediately. Those who are not successful on the exam are given a detailed analysis of where they need improvement for the next sitting. If you pass one exam and not the other, you have five years to pass the other exam before the first is no longer valid.

    Studying for the exam can be challenging for those who do not have extensive experience in the industry.     Anyone who travels a lot for work or on vacation is familiar with checking into hotels. It is always a surprise- sometimes a disappointing one- when you finally get to see the room that you booked. While some hotel rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, others can be smoky, tiny and drab.

    The one feature of a hotel room that can really make or break your experience is the bed. Hotel beds can be notoriously uncomfortable and lumpy, especially the traditional spring or coil beds. Many hotels buy regular cheap coil mattresses and try to use them for as long as possible. Spring, or coil, mattresses, use corkscrewed wire as the internal support. As the body rests on the coils, they push back against the body and can cause uncomfortable pressure points which can lead to lack of sleep and soreness in the morning. Over time, the coils wear and do not spring back as much, allowing you to slump into the mattress in a shapeless lump. Without any support of your back and neck, you muscles try to compensate by holding their position. This also leads to restless sleep and a stiff back and neck.

    It is impossible to know the condition of your hotel room mattress before you enter your room for the first time. If you ask at the front desk what the age of the mattress is when you book your room, you will likely be met with silence and perhaps rolling eyes. Sometimes it is possible to change rooms, but you may well be stuck with the mattress you have.

    There is another common issue with hotel mattresses that is not often discussed and that most people do not want to contemplate- bed bugs. Bed bugs live in dark places and thrive in mattresses, emerging to draw blood from victims unlucky enough to be occupying an infected bed. Bed bugs were all but eradicated from the United States 50 years ago but have made a nasty resurgence since then. Hotels are bed bug hotspots and once a hotel has some come in with an unsuspecting host, it is very difficult to get rid of them.

    Fortunately, there is a solution to all of these hotel mattress problems. Memory foam mattresses provide superior back and neck support compared to spring or coil mattresses. The NASA-formulated foam supports all of the curves of the body and keeps the spine in alignment, creating the perfect environment for sleep. And bed bugs cannot live in or around the memory foam, ensuring a bug-free night of sleep. A hotel that has switched all of its mattresses over to memory foam cannot sustain a bed bug population, which is a relief to guests.

    Many hotels have switched over to using memory foam mattresses in order to improve the comfort of their guests. Finding a hotel that has done so is relatively easy, as most will advertise the fact as a feature of their hotel. Spending time upfront to find a hotel with memory foam mattresses will pay off in the long run with better uninterrupted sleep.

    Environmental awareness and urban sustainability are popular phrases these days. Cities across the United States are working towards being more “green”. This can encompass many initiatives including recycling, waste management, and local food production. The green movement is taking hold in many urban environments as cities struggle to deal with the less visible bi-products of production such as air pollution, landfill constraints and access to whole foods.

    It is often lamented that, in general, the south lags behind the north in environmental awareness. While that is still true in many regions, some southern cities are picking up the ball and proving that they can be as green as any other city. Atlanta is no exception.

    Atlanta is a city of over a half million residents and over 5.5 million residents in the surrounding metropolitan area. It is a major media and technology hub in the south, and the city attracts highly-skilled workers from all over the country. Atlanta’s green sensibilities are a blend of its residents’ needs and desires.

    Atlanta has many active sustainability initiatives in progress. Curbside recycling is a cornerstone of the environmental plan. Atlanta’s curbside recycling is one of the most dynamic in the Southeast. The program recycles fine paper, glass, aluminum and steel cans, plastics and cardboard. The city has contracted with private recyclers who purchase the recycled materials and keep them out of the landfill. Atlanta also maintains several recycling drop off locations for items like batteries and old paint cans.

    Atlanta’s mayor, Shirley Franklin, has been named one of the top “eco-mayors” in the country by Mother Nature Network for her efforts at improving environmental awareness and leading Atlanta towards a greener future. One of the initiatives named in the award is the Beltline, a proposed alternative public transportation system that includes 22 miles of light rail and 2,200 acres of new parks and green spaces. The proposal works the transportation around existing structures, preserving historic homes and buildings and causing minimal disruption to existing neighborhoods. Work will begin on the Beltline project in the fall of this year and will be continued for several years as the land required is purchased from the Georgia Department of Transportation. When it is completed, the Beltline will connect more than 45 Atlanta neighborhoods and will diminish the need for private transportation in much of Atlanta, thereby saving air pollution, gasoline, and traffic congestion.

    Atlanta also monitors its carbon footprint closely and is actively working on reducing it. A carbon footprint represents the amount of stress put on the environment and tries to capture the environmental cost of activities. The city has set targets to reduce energy use, water and fossil fuel usage, and greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. Not only does the city government look to reduce their own carbon footprint but they provide information to their residents on how everyone can be more environmentally responsible.

    Atlanta’s green attitude is just one more of its many draws that have made it one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

    Paper Records the Pace of Change

    When we think of the pace of technology and the way things are changing, one of the areas in which this is demonstrable is in the area of paper. From the earliest days of written language to today, we have not only come a long way with the materials we use to record that language, but we the pace and scale of that change has accelerated dramatically.

    Some of the earliest scribes used clay tablets to record official documents. These tablets, although decidedly bulky, actually had several advantages. First, all you needed was clay and a stylus or even a simple stick. There was no need for fancy tools or the chemical formulation of inks. Second, once hardened and set, official documents recorded on clay tablets were fairly permanent. Although they could be broken or erased by rewetting the clay, they were just about impossible to alter. This property made them perfect for commercial contracts, legal agreements, and even treaties, since both parties could be assured of the security of the document’s contents.

    The bulkiness of clay tablets, however, gave way to primitive papers or paper-like materials. Papyrus, thin sheets of animal hide, tightly woven linen and many more different writing materials held sway for literally thousands of years without substantial change. These papers all required a writing implement to leave some ink or other contrasting residue to form words. Various dyes, formulated inks, and even metals such as lead were used at various times throughout history. Although today’s pencil leads are made of other materials, actual small lead rods were once used as writing implements. The metal was so soft that drawing it across paper would cause enough lead to rub off that it left legible marks upon the papers.

    These early papers were relatively difficult to make, had varying qualities and consistencies, and varying life expectancies. The introduction of cellulose or wood pulp paper and the industrial paper mill changed the availability and cost of paper. Combined with mechanical printing presses, this innovation made books a low cost commodity available to almost anyone.

    The reliability of mechanical printers made them ideal to record commercial transaction at the point of sale. Cash registers would not only calculate the total sale amount automatically, but print out an itemized list of the purchase for both customer and merchant. These small point of sale (POS) printers were made even more efficient by the introduction of thermal paper. Thermal paper required no separate ink to be kept in the printer mechanism. Instead the ink was trapped in a matrix within the thermal paper rolls and was released selectively by the application of heat to form printed characters. This increased the reliability of the POS printers by reducing moving parts.

    Nowadays, we see not just the small leaps of the past, but major transformations such as magnetic stripes on debit cards that can be read and rewritten electronically. There are electronic books like Amazon’s Kindle, and even flexible e-paper that allows entire books or newspapers to be displayed and then erased for the next day’s edition to be downloaded.

    One can only imagine the next paper revolution, but if the pace of change continues its current trend , it won’t take long to find out.

    Almost everything that happens in a church relies on good sound. The minister speaks to his or her congregation through leading prayer, preaching and discussion with parishioners. The church choir communicates the principles of the Bible through verse and song, leading the congregation to join them. In order for everyone to understand what is being taught and to be able to join in, they have to be able to hear it. That’s where good acoustics come in.

    Acoustics refers to the quality and projection of sound in a space. Acoustics can be affected by many thinks such as the surrounding surfaces (cement walls, carpeting, and curtains for example), the shape and size of the space, and the tone and pitch of the sound itself. Sound travels in a straight line and, when it encounters a hard surface, it ricochets and begins to travel in a different direction. If the sound is surrounded by hard surfaces, it will ricochet many times before winding down. Hard surfaces enable the sound to travel far, but the bouncing of the sound into different directions can make the sound difficult to hear properly and understand by the recipient. However, when sound encounters a soft surface, it is absorbed into it and the sound dissipates quickly. It is more difficult to hear from farther distances but, because it does not ricochet in different directions, it is easier to understand when heard.

    Church acoustics can be more complicated than the acoustics in most other types of rooms. Churches often have vaulted ceilings which can direct sounds in unexpected directions. Ricocheting sounds, called reverberation, can create a buzzing quality to the sound which makes it difficult to hear and understand. Master builders hundreds of years ago understood the basics of church acoustics and built the church to take advantage of the best possible amplification and direction of the sound. Many of these churches remain today, exhibiting the same excellent quality sound they did when they were built.

    Modern churches, however, often do not possess the same innate acoustic properties as did their predecessors. But there are ways to improve church acoustics whatever the configuration.

    The biggest acoustic issue in churches is the reverberation or echo of low frequencies. When low frequencies bounce off of a wall and encounter other fresh sound waves, they can either amplify the original sound wave making the sound louder, or they can cancel the other sound out. This is called a standing wave. Standing waves can make sounds in churches- whether it is the spoken word or music- muddy and indistinct.

    The easiest way to prevent standing waves and other sound ricochets is through the use of acoustic panels.     A hundred years ago, most home cooking was accomplished using a handful of this, a pinch of that, and a walnut-sized piece of something else. Although measurement tools were available then, they weren’t often used by the home cook, who learned about meal preparation from her mother and grandmother.

    In the 20th century, mass-produced cookbooks began to appear and, in order to have the recipes turn out the same for all cooks, standardized measures were used, such as a cup of rice or a pint of milk. After all, listing a “fist-sized piece of lard” would mean different things to different size women.

    While using Imperial measurements like teaspoons, tablespoons and cups worked well for most recipes, it still led to inconsistencies in measure. This is because most recipe measurements are meant only for liquid ingredients. They are measures of volume, not of mass.

    For many recipes, this really doesn’t matter as dry ingredients maintain a similar mass when measured. Take rice for example. If you measured out ten separate cups of rice carefully and then counted the grains of rice in each cup, you would come pretty close to them all being the same.

    Flour, on the other hand, is an ingredient that does not take well to volume measurement. If you scooped a cup of flour from the bin and compared it to sifting flour into a cup until it was full, you would have two very different masses of flour. The flour in the bin is more compact and you would end up with more flour per cup. The sifted flour is full of tiny air pockets and therefore takes up more volume for the same mass.

    Flour is also one of the most important ingredients to be exacting with. In baking, especially, the proportions of flour, liquids and yeast have to be exact to get consistent results. That’s why many chefs weigh their flour and most other dry ingredients rather than using volume measures. Many high end recipe books also call for weights on dry ingredients- sometimes including a roughly equivalent volume.

    In order to properly weigh dry ingredients, you need to start with the right kitchen scale. Forget about using the cheap one from the discount store. It likely works on springs and will not be calibrated for fine measurements. A digital kitchen scale works well and is relatively inexpensive. A good quality scale can last you many years so take the time to invest in the right one. Stainless steel is easy to clean and presents an elegant look on your kitchen counter. Digital kitchen scales are usually calibrated to be accurate to 1 gram and they automatically deduct the weight of a bowl or container that your food is in.
